The previous champions pulled off another steal when they paid INR 1 crore to acquire David Wiese.

At the IPL 2023 mini-auction in Cochin on December 23, the Kolkata Knight Riders took no prisoners. Due to their poor net run rate from the previous season, the two-time champions were erratic and did not advance to the postseason.

KKR had 11 player spots and a purse of INR 7.05 crore before this year's auction (eight Indian and three overseas players). They released the majority of their stars, including Pat Cummins, Sam Billings, Aman Khan, Shivam Mavi, Mohammad Nabi, Chamika Karunaratne, Aaron Finch, Alex Hales, Abhijeet Tomar, Ajinkya Rahane, Ashok Sharma, Baba Indrajith, Pratham Singh, Ramesh Kumar, Rasikh Salam, and Sheldon Jackson.

The team headed by Shreyas Iyer traded for bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur from the Delhi Capitals, as well as Lockie Ferguson, a New Zealand pacer, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, an Afghan wicketkeeper-batsman, from the Gujarat Titans.

With a steal purchase of potential batter Narayan Jagadeesan for INR 90 lakh, KKR made their debut. Then, for INR 60 lakh, they made a purchase of Vaibhav Arora, an uncapped domestic Indian star. Initially playing the waiting game, Kolkata settled on Suyash Sharma at his basic price of INR 20 lakh.

The previous champions pulled off another steal when they paid INR 1 crore to acquire David Wiese. During the accelerated auction, the Kolkata-based franchise came out swinging, purchasing three seasoned players: the Bangladeshi duo of Litton Das (INR 50 lakh) and Shakib Al Hasan (INR 1.5 crore), Mandeep Singh (INR 50 lakh), and the Indian star Ajay Devgn (INR 50 lakh).
